The How to Close a Funding Gap report has laid out a clear and sobering picture: without bold action in the Global Fund’s 8th Replenishment, the fight against HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria will face severe setbacks. Underfunding stalls progress by forcing cuts to community-led programs, scales back prevention efforts, and delays innovation that save lives. It’s clear that to stay on track for the Sustainable Development Goals, the Global Fund must aim for US$28.1 billion—an ambitious but necessary target. Anything less, and we risk undoing decades of progress. Our 8 Asks for the 8th Replenishment (ENG, FR) highlight how the Investment Case can make this reality clear.
The 8th Replenishment is more than just about numbers; it’s about setting a vision for the future of global health, one that responds to the growing needs of the communities most affected. Since the 7th Replenishment, the world has faced elevated inflation, deepened inequality, and the ongoing fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, with the added threat of climate change and escalating attacks on the rights of key populations, the next cycle must address these headwinds with bold commitments. That’s why civil society advocates are sounding the alarm. The next investment case must be more than just an extension of past efforts—it has to be a blueprint for addressing these new and mounting challenges.
Civil society has endorsed the 8 key asks for the 8th Replenishment (ENG, FR). These asks emphasize the need for a people-centered approach, a firm stance against legal attacks on key populations, and a clear plan to harness the innovations of today’s health landscape without sacrificing the broader goal of equity.
